When Paris fell to German occupation on June 14, 1940, French resistance fighters allegedly cut the elevator cables to the Eiffel Tower. It was because they didn't want Hitler to hoist flag on Eiffel.
After it French people started to say "Hitler conquered France, but never conquered the Eiffel Tower."
